i'll be posting all my issues in 1 thread in the hopes of not littering everywhere...
so I was trying to find a satellite image provider for tsre such that it doesn't demand cash or credit card. I found MapTiler. I registered for an account, tried both URLS as https://www.maptiler.com/cloud/stati...55/-20.8/-47.3 (as this page says) and put in my default API key that MapTiler provides. I, then, put it in the Settings Editor > Maps > Image Maps URL and General Maps API key.
It doesn't work... Is it not supposed to? I even tried manually adding the URL+full key in the imagemapsurl entry in settings.txt...
I haven't looked deeply at this but as long as the same tokens in {brackets} are there, it might work. They seem to follow Google zoom levels.

nah not working...
I tried: https://api.maptiler.com/maps/{mapId}/{tileSize}/{z}/{x}/{y}{scale}.png
and https://api.maptiler.com/maps/{mapId}/{tileSize}/{z}/{x}/{y}{scale}.png?access_token=
and https://api.maptiler.com/maps/{mapId}/{tileSize}/{z}/{x}/{y}{scale}.png&key=
In every case, I get two 2 options in the dropdown: OSM Vector and Missing URL in settings.txt If I click on Load anyway, after selecting the "Missing URL in settings.txt" option, TSRE either crashes or says "Data read failed, see log.txt"
I will look later tonight at accommodating that provider.

At this point, I'd subscribe to MapBox or Google, knowing you'll probably never see a bill.
Yeah, their free tier is very generous and more than enough. But I don't own a credit card.. 😅
I'll stick to OSM vectors I guess. They're a bit inaccurate as they have some tracks missing for some reason but they're free...
Google used to allow linking a bank account. You might also be able to use Google Pay with a prepaid card, but Google does have detection for prepaid cards in their default payments for a developer account.
Google does have a Demo API key available -- no credit card required. Since I have a regular API key, that's not something I can test easily, but you're free to give it a shot.

The "F" key doesn't fix everything. I often notice that a perfectly level piece of track or road will be slightly above the ground level after using the "F" key. If you are trying to create a cut or a fill, good luck. I've tried many combinations in the parameters for these on the terrain edit panel, and none come even close to the good appearance produced by MSTS/RE. Sometimes, as in my rendering of the GN switchbacks at Stevens Pass, I will have to use berms instead, especially where one track is 50 meters or so above the next level down.
In the case of what you are doing, all tracks, regardless of type or number must be exactly at the same level. If not, then even a tiny difference will cause terrain to be either a little over one or the other, or a little below. After 24 years of doing routes, I still have some hair left.

You're right. Thanks to your comment, I was finally able to make some progress. However, I'm curious, the MSTS/RE gave better results than TSRE?!

MSTS/RE has only one good poinit and it is huge. Yes, cuts & fills are much better. So much so that I will often move a route over to my ancient XP machine and shape some cuts and fills with the MSTS/RE on it. However I am not good at fine details, but as a track geometry inspector on the SR in my younger days, I demand near perfection in the track and some have noticed this. As a result I have done the track for a few routes by request, and many of mine are uploaded as "incomplete". In other areas TSRE is far superior.
I will point ou though that some objects being produced now, do not have .sd files, only .s files. Since .sd files are required for MSTS but not TSRE or ORTS, then I cannot move a route to the XP machine unless I know that all .sd files are present.
That uniform that I have on in the picture is my docent uniform, really a carpenter's apron. It has a "Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec" logo on it, and the patch on the hat as well as the yellow name badge indentifies me as a docent. Every bona fide railfan should go out and ride the C&TS. Your wife or lady friend will prefer late Sept. when the Aspen trees change color.

Haha, I've only just made it out of my teens, and I'm not even from the U.S., so I guess I'll have to save that trip for a little later. 😅😂
