    Grade issues

We all know, or should know, by now that when adjusting gradient while laying track, one should turn off the track database link before making the adjustment, and if you are laying new track, this works. But if you forget to do that just once, or if as in the case of the image, you need to go back and CHANGE the gradient, things can go awry. In the case shown, I intended to change the gradient over a stretch by -.05% in an effort to provide a smooth grade between lines already laid at both ends. However, it appears that even though I made the change after using the "Z" key to remove the link, there was still an issue. What I found was that the next piece after the one I was going to adjust, had to be removed from proximity to that piece or else the linkage would reappear exactly as it was before the adjustment, which in this case caused the next piece to attach above the desired position. Once I moved the next piece further away, I would guess far enough to get it out of some connect distance, I could reset the linkage with the "Z" key and everything worked. Sometimes I had to delete the next piece and reinsert it new - thank the Lord I don't have dementia (yet) ALGN_ERROR01.jpg otherwise I would forget what the parameters of the required piece were to be. I also found that once the space shown had increased to perhaps 3x the amount shown, things would then work as I expected. If anyone wonders, this particular item is in the Holsten Arsenal west of Kingsport. It is a veritable bowl of spghetti with at least 4 loops in it, so once I release this route activities in this area should be interesting. This area is roughed in on the existing Kingsport sub. in the library but with the many options now available, a reasonably accurate rendition of the whole area is in the version 2 that I ought to release late this year as working/incomplete.

I've run into that issue countless times.... it's almost like TSRE has the opposite of dementia. It appears to retain track object data in memory even after you think its been removed from the TDB... and then reuses that data when it finds a track piece matching the original XYZ coordinates.

The fix for which I've had the most success with has been closing down TSRE after removing references from the TDB & saving, and then starting a new session with a clean TDB in memory.

Shutting down TSRE might cause a loss of data and I have found that moving the next piece away from the one being adjusted works. And as I indicated, just deleting the next pliece and inserting it fresh works too. Evidently there is a certain distance involved though because once you reach the point where the next piece is far enough vertical from the piece you are adjusting, the problem goes away. So I guess dementia depends on distance. How are things up on top of Nemo tunnel now. I imagine the wife is more glad than you to be out of the RV.

Indeed she is. I like the fact we can hear trains on one side of the tunnel from the back porch, and on the other side from the front porch....

          Eric,

Sounds like heaven on earth to me. Well my wife finally figured out that doing a yearly docent week on the C&TS is what recharges me, so we leave here on Sept. 21, and return on Sept 28 or 29. Many docents still have children, so there is a scarcity then, when the western fall colors kick in (mostly Aspen) and crowds are large, so the docent leader gives me whatever I want. (3 trips). Then in late Oct. we'll take a Kelly tour up the eastern area as far as Scranton, PA. My wife wanted that and made a deposite before she realized that 3 short train rides are involved. Old railroaders never die, they just jump the track.

            Eric,

On the former Clinchfield, there is also a group of homes over a tunnel. A few miles northwest of Johnson City, there is a nice community of fine homes (or at least they looked grand to me in 2003) over the top of Indian Ridge Tunnel. So in improving on the Kingsport Sub. some of these will be included. Here is the layout. The tunnel is mostly on a 2 degree curve about 100 feet below street level. I use 33 ft tunnel section on odd curves like this.
