    Editing Loose Consists?

    Hi,

Is there a way to edit loose consists in a activity that doesn't involve manually editing each wagon?

    Ty.

You can edit the loose consists in TSRE's consist editor.

      Hi,

This will be so much easier than the old methods.

      Thank you!

Being involved in this now for a couple of freight activities (mainly to remind myself of why I only run passenger activities) using TSRE, I can assure you it is a long and tedious process.

Many don't want to hear this, but ConBuilder, the older free version available in the library, does this very easily.

Both CEs have good and bad features. example: TSRE-CE has the capability to rename Loose Consist to a detailed and useful name. ConBuilder does not have that feature. ConBuilder warns the user that the original length of the consist was exceeded. This may or may not be a critical tool. If one had a 200 foot siding with 4 40ft boxcars in the loose consist and replaced them with 65ft boxcars then the switch to the siding would be fouled. But if the siding was 500 ft long it would be a non-problem. In either case ConBuilder would warn the user with a warning "Length Exceeded". TSRE-CE does not have this feature. Of course the main reason to edit a Loose Consist is caused by the user not having the item(s) listed in the consist. In which case ConBuilder would not have the accurate original length .

You can also use an app like TextCrawler to do wholesale search/replace. As an example, you may have many repeat wagons across many loose consists. TSRE can only replace the wagons in 1 loose consist at a time. But TextCrawler can replace each instance. This is useful when you have missing files, or just want to swap out an older model with a newer one. I use them in tandem--pull up TSRE to see what's missing, and what the expected file name is, as well as finding which model I want to use as the replacement. Then input the information into TextCrawler for the actual swap.

Yes, neither CE has the capability to replace ALL occurrences of an item in the entire Trainset. BUT both CEs do have the capability to replace every occurrence of an item within an Activity.

I haven't used Conbuilder in over a decade, maybe 2 decades. So I can't comment about it's abilities or limitations. But TRSE has a few Replace commands. Just to be clear, when working with an Activity ("Loose") Consist in TSRE, the commands Replace: Only selected unit and Replace: All units in selected consist do work. The command Replace: All units in all Consists has never worked with Activity/"Loose" Consists. The Replace: All units in all Consists command does work with Consists.
