Watch a Tesla go through a Rail crossing and just miss getting hit.

That is why we can't have nice things.... crew threw it in emergency and brought the railroad to a halt for an impatient moron. If you like what you see here at Trainsim.com, be it the discussions and knowledge in the forums, items saved in our library or the ongoing development of our TSRE Fork, I hope you'll consider a paid membership to help support keeping the site operating.... Looks like the Tesla was smart enough to stop at the crossing gate, but when the traffic light 300 yards further downstream turned green the Tesla reacted to that and drove right through the gate. Yep, AI would make no small mistakes, no siree, only big ones.Comment

I'm sorry for saying this ......but the gene pool of stupid people doing things like this need to be eliminated.Comment

What I don't get is you are sitting in this car and not trying to stop it? Don't know who's more brain dead, the AI or the person in the car?

Someone realized that the engineer shot the brakes. This is the closest I have seen to anyone not getting hit and I suspect that the engineer's quick reaction on the brakes saves this guy. He should, however, be in line for the Darwin Award. Having run trains during wild cat strikes, I also suspect the engineer was in need of fresh underwear as well. This should also remind any who saw this video of just how long it takes for a train to stop and this was not a very large train either.

Geary and Jerry,
I noticed that too. The passenger is sitting there in the Tesla, as cool as a cucumber, while he almost gets wiped out by the commuter train.
Or maybe the audio was added later.
As far as the bike rider is concerned, he is darn lucky he didn't get turned into roadkill. I counted 44 loaded ore cars. I am guessing that the train was probably going at 45 mph. It took a little over one train length for the train to come to a stop. It looks like the train missed him by inches
Nobody talks about the engineer and conductor. If I was in the cab during this incident I would have had a heart attack, (No pun intended Geary). I have heard that an engineer will have about three traumatic experiences during his career. Is that true? Do they receive counselling afterward from the railroad?

Meanwhile the poor engineer isn't sure if he hit the jerk or not, so has to stop the train in emergency, maybe have a heart attack, only to find that the jerk isn't even around anymore. Ties up the line for who know how long. What this all costs the railroad in lost time, wasted fuel, etc., which is all money.
On a similar note - had an incident while still working. Many of our DPW worker at local volunteer firefighters, so we hear them get a call for a child possibly hit by a train, ( LIRR Commuter Service ). End result was no one was hit.
The Conductor sees a small child running towards the train at a crossing, and was close enough that they might have hit them, so pulls the emergency cord. Jerks train to a stop, requires 3rd rail shutdown so FD can conduct a search under the train. Ties up the line, but thankfully no one was hit. The child and mother were nowhere to be found.Last edited by oper190; 04-27-2026, 09:47.Geary "Mr. Hart" Gerhardt - Owner and CEO of Hart Rail Lines, Hart Commuter Railways, and Hart Rail Cars. It could have been even worse that that. Train goes into emergency, slack runs in, one flange climbs over the railhead, the car derails, a dozen more cars derail, damage to private property, claims in the millions of dollars, etc. Likely? No. But entirely preventable.👍 1Comment
