File ID 2604 is one of several UK compound engine files in the library. It is MSTS. Coalstonewcastle used to have a number of items setup for OR, but right now it seems that page is not accessible. During testing of compound code Peter converted a standard engine to run as a compound. Here is a link to it in my dropbox, https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/if7se...=76xoh686&dl=0
I downloaded the CTN compound Atlantic in hopes that I could figure out why compound locomotives never go faster than 2 to 3 mph. This happens to every compound locomotive I have tried to use. Just FYI, the CTN compound only managed 2.2 to 2.3 mph. Does ORTS no longer support compound locomotives?
If you cannot get any faster than that you are clearly doing something wrong. You need to explain what you are doing. I have just run my copy up to the mid 70s and still accelerating.
As the Open Rails manual has zero information that I have found on driving compound steam locomotives, and I have zero knowledge on the differences between simple and compound locomotives, you are most likely correct in that assumption. Would you be so kind as to instruct me in the proper diving of a compound steam locomotive?
I suspect the problem is incorrect use of the <P> key.
Until we get the ability to use proper compound engine controls the driving is the same as for a simple steam engine. The compounding is coded for the engine to be set up with different cylinder sizes in the eng file along with the notation that it is a compound. I never use manual controls when driving a steam engine, too many things to remember, which key does what and when?. I have never ever used the P key on a steam loco, I do not even know what that is supposed to do. I know it raises the panto on an electric engine.
Beer is not a matter of life or death, it is much more serious than that.
... the CTN compound only managed 2.2 to 2.3 mph ...
I got it up to 70 mph on flat track from the Coals to Newcastle Test Route. All I did was releasing the engine brakes, and move the reverser and regulator to full (75% and 100% respectively).
I'm using Open Rails 1.5.1, and compound steam locomotives are not supported in that version. From what I read at Elvas Tower, the starting valve (<P> key) bug was not fixed until T1.6.1-351-g26912b530 version. So the only thing I'm doing wrong is using an older version.
There is a thread about operating a compound steam engine on Elvas Tower. I know very little about steam, so I am unlikely to be able to help. But Open Rails has info and tools to figure out what is going on. Thus I added the following to the Elvas Tower thread:
Could you post a screenshot with the Locomotive Information from the HUD, and the Train Driving Info window. This is while running as fast as you can get it go. Best if the two sets of info do not overlap.
To open the HUD: Alt-F5, then Shift-Alt-F5 until the Locomotive Information shows
To open the Train Driving Info: F6
To take a screen shot, use the Print Scrn key. The file should be in Pictures\OpenRails

I've read a couple of threads about compound locomotives at Elvas Tower. I learned something about a compound engine starter valve, but I can't figure out how it works and the manual has no information on this.

See the thread I started on Elvas Tower. The screenshots are there.
