Led by a pair of General Electric EL-C motors (NHRR designation EF-4, aka 'bricks') a heavy New Haven Railroad freight heads eastbound towards Cedar Hill Yard in these rainy day images recorded circa 1966. After running diesel-powered freights under energized catenary for a number of years in the 1950s, the New Haven reinstated electric freight operations on the West End in 1963 after having purchased 12 ex-Virginian EL-Cs at a bargain basement price (one of the twelve was used for parts from the start). Customarily run in pairs, the EF-4 bricks provided excellent service until the end of the NHRR in 1968, and most soldiered on thru the PC years into Conrail, finally being retired in 1981 when Conrail discontinued electric freight activity.
