    Bob Wirth

Click image for larger version Name:	avatar57045_2.jpg Views:	0 Size:	6.9 KB ID:	2301403 In early April 2024, I received confirmation of something many of us have suspected for a while... the passing of Bob Wirth, on February 8, 2020.

Railroads weren't just a hobby for either Bob or his wife Millie, as both worked for the Santa Fe. Bob was in a variety of roles including Accounting and Finance, and retired from the railroad as Director of Systems Development. One of his bigger accomplishments at ATSF was completing the merge for all of the IT systems needed to support the SPSF merger on day one. Turns out that paint wasn't the only thing done prematurely and for naught...

In retirement, Bob continued to show his love for all things Santa Fe. He completed 17 routes which are in the file library, covering just about the entire ATSF mainline from Chicago to Barstow, CA, plus the Joint Line from Pueblo to Denver, as well as the Phoenix and Grand Canyon subs north and south from Williams, AZ. He also found time to complete DRGW's Tennessee Pass and the White Pass & Yukon....

From the time he joined the forums, Bob averaged one route a year. While some of his routes may appear to be a bit sparse on the trackside scenery, the trackwork itself is impeccable, and all done from track charts. I'm pretty certain he will continue to hold the record for the number of completed routes for quite some time.

His wife Millie passed away in March 2022.

Godspeed and green signals ahead, Bob and Millie...

As much as I love running and editing his routes, he is surely missed. Much respect.

Very sad to hear,as I thought that this was the case. Generous is an understatement for the work that this man did for our Community. His Routes are STILL the lynchpin for my Railroad "empire". The sparseness that some have commented on was purposeful,so that people with lower powered computers could run his Routes. What more can be said for his generosity. Brian

i just saw this and I had wondered about it myself. Bob lived in Florida in retirement and we corresponded a little. He was Santa Fe to the core and will be missed. His routes were not all that sparse if you are familiar with the SouthWest. I have not rode the transcon any further west than Williams Jct., AZ when my wife and I went to the Grand Canyon, but other than sage brush and small trees, there is not much out there. Bob used pretty much the same rules as I do, i.e. if you can't see it from the train, don't bother with it.

I also just found out today of Bob's passing.

He was a very generous person with his time and efforts and I'm sure he was a fine person as well.

Wow I am just now seeing this. Rest In Peace Bob Wirth. You were a great contributor to this community.

I was admired by him and his major role at constantly building releasing routes more than a lot and most his time at building a complete Transcon route. I enjoyed and still enjoy running his routes because I had the interest by merging as far as I could.
