    follow request: what is it?

I got a follow request from another member and said no, explaining that I didn't think permission was needed to follow my posts and I didn't want an alert every time the other member posted something. The answer was "okay whatever," but I still don't know what a follow request does. (I didn't see how to search this forum, but I did see that it has more than 1,300 pages; I apologize if the question has already been answered.)

You have it right. You can follow someone else's posts and get notifications. They can follow you and get the same.
