ID:	2345672 I know, I should have posted something yesterday for April Fools, but the reality of Amtrak merging with Greyhound just didn't seem too far off anymore. Nor would telling people I sold the site to SpaceX who was going to now reform this as SpaceSim.com or something with an X in it.

Truth is I've been a bit busy the last eight weeks, mostly with finishing up stuff that needed to be done around our property. After almost a year of planning and construction, we finally moved into our house last week, and have been in the process of emptying out the hundreds of boxes and totes that held everything we owned for the last ten months. I'm guessing we still have another week or two of finishing that up, but being able to sleep in a real bed and cook in a full size kitchen is something you just wouldn't appreciate unless you'd lived in a camper for ten months.

The timing was excellent -- we've had crap weather most of February and early March, but since the day we got our occupancy permit, it hasn't dropped below 55F during the day. Two acres of ice rink slicked mud has dried out, and the last vestiges of the construction phase -- the big blue dumpster -- have been removed, leaving the yard fully available to start grading and seeding.

We still have a million things to do, but getting in the house was a huge milestone.

Financially, the state of the site is in a good spot. In 2025, our costs for servers or bandwidth didn't increase, but we are starting to get thin on storage. With models getting more complex, textures getting larger, and routes getting bigger, it's inevitable that more storage will be needed by mid-year.

Operationally, there were a few users affected by hiccups in February with regard to logins. After two weeks of trial and error with the vendor's support, the happy space we needed to be as far as configurations go was identified. The only downside... links which used "www.trainsim.com" became obsolete. Most sites haven't advertised themselves with www for quite a while, and the way that session management is handled required picking one nomenclature and sticking with it. Because of the www deprecation, we also had some issues with Stripe payments that took a few days to sort out.

Apologies to those who got caught up in either of those traps. I've not heard anything new in three weeks, so I assume everyone is now good to go. PM me if you're not.

Because of that instability, I did defer a planned upgrade of the board software to the most current version (6.2). Functionally, there's no new features or enhancements that compel upgrading, so I'll skip this version and wait for the next one which has added value. But it won't wait forever. One advantage of staying current is that the vendor was able to work a support ticket with me and find a fix. If we fall behind on versions, that path for assistance goes away and becomes a huge liability.

We all know what happens when software falls out of support and goes beyond end of life... Avoiding that is still a primary goal for me.

ID:	2345671 Update 24 for Run8 was released last week. If you're like me and don't run the updater often, it may be worth your while to get the latest and greatest fixes. They've also released the Fresno Sub South, 85 miles of railroad between Bakersfield and Fresno in the SoCal region. Lots of industries and switching opportunities on this one, which I always enjoy more than mainline running. I did notice their Facebook page has been a little quieter than it had been. They'd been posting almost weekly, and then nothing until last week, which I'd hoped was a sign that Version 4 was almost here, but alas no announcements on that just yet.

A much bigger development was mentioned in the Run8 forum here... Jason Webb of HyRail Productions has decided to retire. If you weren't already aware, he produced the Southeast region's CSX routes, and they will continue to be sold by Run8 following his departure. Seeing future development of that region potentially halted will be a big loss. I can certainly understand the desire to step back from the forge and the grind, and get back to doing other things you enjoy, and wish Jason well with his break.

ID:	2345670 Speaking of dusty, old stuff... as some of you recall, I'd been in contact with Tom Lindey's family earlier in the year, aka Frank Burns, former operator of the Mophouse website. His daughter thought allowing his favorite models and reskins to be available again for others to enjoy would be a great way to honor his memory, which opened the door to having those files uploaded here. Thanks to Charles Stagg, who provided what appears to be most of The Mophouse collection, there are now over 70 downloads available which would have otherwise been lost forever. And yes, many of these date back to the First Decade of MSTS, so caveat emptor as to the detail and quality... But, they're also the biggest source of MoPac content for those of us who remember it prior to being bought up by Union Pacific. Some of the ReadMe's were tough to view, with many names in them of other long departed friends. Give them a try if you've ever wondered what the Mophouse was about.

Last month, it was also announced that the-train.de and TSSF.eu , the longtime home for German and other European content, would be closing down at the end of 2026. There are some moves afoot to try and take it in a similar direction as our site did, by being entirely member donation funded, but that's not something I'd bank on until we see it survive past December. Hopefully they figure it out. And if not, as with UKTS, let's be grateful that the owner gave ample warning for those who have taken its availability for granted. Now's the time to get things that you may have otherwise put off downloading.

As always, thanks for your support here and your patience as I work thru the never-ending tasks of trying to maintain platform stability. It would be easier to stop with the version upgrades, but having support from the vendor has paid off a few times, and that only happens if we stay current.

This site wouldn't be here without your contributions to the library, as well as your memberships to help keep the servers on. Thanks for all of you who make the stop here part of your regular routine. We're all glad you're here.

A slightly belated Happy New Year... and a happy Snowmaggedon if you happen to be in the current storm Fern's path. The site's servers should be unaffected, so feel free to download as long as you have power & internet...

I was ready to write this up two weeks ago, until the stunning loss in the first round of the NFL playoffs of my beloved Green Bay Packers to the soon to be Gary or Arlington Heights Bears, which had me in a mandatory mourning period.

    • FlightSim.com Closing Down?
      by eric

I was told today (and confirmed) that FlightSim.com has changed ownership yet again, and the new owners are going to be closing down both their file library as well as their forums "temporarily"....

As someone just said to me an hour ago... Imagine the situation OUR community would be in today had we not obtained our independence three years ago...

It's heartbreaking, and hopefully the forum content isn't lost forever.

’Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the site, Not a member was posting, not even a bot. The File Library waited with downloads all clean, In hopes that a First Class Member soon would be seen.

The users were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of Open Rails danced in their heads; And Eric in his RV, and I with my mouse, Had just settled down in a quiet, not yet finished house.

    • Steam4Me Content
      by eric

As many of you know, Steam4Me, founded by Yuri Sos, closed down in early 2024 following his death in October 2023. Unlike UKTS, where ample notice of their closure was provided, there was no notice, and no ability to immediately provide a new home for the many uniquely Australian routes and rolling stock. Some items were fortunately available from the Wayback Machine, but several key ones were not.

Thanks to the efforts of Peter O'Neill (ossie) and several content creators who were...

    • Happy Thanksgiving

About this time, I expect many of you are ready for a nap in the big comfy chair, while others are just sitting down for their Thankgiving dinner.

This week, I'm grateful for many things...

First and foremost... I'm grateful for family. All three of our kids were our new property for the first time ever this past Sunday. Our youngest son works and lives in another state as a school teacher, and the timing just hasn't worked out for him to be able to come out here since...
